It’s interesting that so many different companies have their own proprietary shape etc, but I can’t find any scientific research to back any of it up. Fascinating!

The way trimmer line gets worn is important to the cutting too. Also a possible reason why the sharp sharp square doesn't spin true could be intentional. Since if you cut a 3 inch blade of grass once you have a long blade which sticks out so the 2 cuts reduces the trimmings sizes to clear away and break down. Additionally, the 2 cuts acts like a blending sheer. Weed trimming helps make the lawn appear as if it was all cut with a lawnmower. You start putting in hard cut lines and sharp edges you ruin that smooth seamless look.

Hey Dustin, this is my 2nd time watching this video. I am only half way through this time and I dont remember if you considered this... The way you are holding the grass keeps it tight. As I am sure you know when cutting something with a knife or scissors it cuts easier if there is tension on it. I wonder if some of the shapes with that flat edge catch the limp grass with the flat edge and then the angle cuts it as it wraps around? I love your videos, keep up the great work!

I reckon the sharp sharp square is very useful for someone like Robet who spends all his time 'Weed eating'. If the wire doesnt create one disk then you have a slightly wider area of cutting potential. Let's say you want the grass at a level height. The slightly wider cutting area allows for greater up and down motion of the weed eater. Also you'll be cutting the shorter grass as well as the tall with the wider cutting area. This is my take on it but I am no physicist, engineer or whatever profession that is. Also STRIMMER is the most relevent name. The tool strims the grass, weed or other type of vegetation. A weed whacker implies it simply whacks weeds. Weed eater again implies it only "eats" weeds. Soooooo, Strimmer is the best name for it because it does not imply a single medium to be cut or imply the tool has the capacity to eat.

Erik Jarandson
Erik Jarandson Před 23 dny
When the professional weed eater guy's cord didn't straighten out completely, I suspect that it's because he uses a more powerful weed eater. That might also require a stiffer and tougher cord than what's optimal for less powerful weed eaters. In fact, I strongly suspect that a much more complex and exhaustive set of experiments would be needed to say anything definitive about what shape of cord is best. Certainly, both density and stiffness would have to be isolated.

I think this is unrealistic due to the grass blade being tensioned from both ends. Real grass blades are being "held from below", and perhaps the whipping effect on the loose upper part of the grass blade could make a difference in the way the blade reacts to being whacked. This and the possible whipping of the wire itself, if the vegetation is denser than just grass blades.

I used to cut grass all day. The rounder line has less drag and can be spun up much faster which makes a big difference to the cut The square stuff has more drag and you can hear it in the engine RPM but will chomp through thicker material without breaking. One thing that wasn’t mentioned in the video is that the line is never usually has a freshly cut edge. It normally forms a taper fairly quickly. If you took the line with the inner core you may well find that it tapers down at the tip and provides a better cut after a bit of usage.
